Udupi an important Vaishnavite coastal town in Karnataka, is located 381kms from the capital Bangalore. The urban focus of Udupi is an open Square surrounded by temples and matts. Udupi is the birth place of the 12th century saint Madhava, who set up eight sanyasi matts in the town and is one of Karnataka's most important pilgrimage sites. Udupi is also known for its delicious cuisine and Udupi restaurants all over the country.

Tourist Attractions of Udupi :
» Jog Falls: The Jog in Shimoga District is the tallest water fall in India where the river Sharavati jumps from a height of 293 mts. into four beautiful cascades . The best time to visit is only during July to October.

» The Cauvery at Shivasamudra falls (in Mandya district) has twin jumps, Gaganachukki and Bharachukki, one km away from each other and their water has been harnessed for production of power from 1901. The river Shimsha , a tributary of the Cauvery, has its fall in Malavalli taluk in Mandya district.

» Abbi Falls is 5 km away from Madikeri, Kodagu district which is a perennial hill-station.
The Irrupu falls, 48 km from Virajpet in Kodagu District, is bounded by scenic locals.

» Kaup a hamlet of Padu village about l2 kms south of Udupi Kaup is situated on the coastal belt, which passes through the West Coast National Highway. Marda Heggade, a chieftain, rose to power here during the Vijayanagara days. It has an old lighthouse, the guiding star of navigators who are warned of the presence of dangerous rocks in the sea. This Tower of light not only guides the ships but also has a monumental significance. Positioned all alone it spreads light on the shore of darkness. It was most probably begun in 1906 on the rocks and in about 1935 the tower was all set. The man made tower is at the height of about 34 meters and its light spreads over a distance of about 34 miles and can be seen from a distance of about 100 miles. The lantern has a burner of 55 meter P. V. burner comprising of 30 pieces, 5 panels and 3.6 diameter glass. The surrounding glass has a height of 1.83 meters. It has a spiral staircase. The fuel used for the lamp is kerosene Recently the electricity supply is also provided at the light tower.There is also an old ruined fort. The place is known for its temples of goddess Mariamma. The Jaina Basadi there is in ruins and so also an old Janardhana shrine.

» Malpe About four kms to the west of Udupi, Malpe is an important port of the Karnataka coast. It is situated at the mouth of the Malpe/Udyavara River. The river is navigable to small cargo boats for about ten kms during high tide. The place has fascinating natural scenic view. It has been a centre of commercial activities for a long time, and one plus point is that it is a natural port. There are three rocky islands to the west of it. The northern-most island is called Daria-Bahadurgad, the middle one Daria-Gadara-Kallu and the southern most Kari-Illada-Kallu.

» BY Air - Mangalore Airport is 59 kms from Udupi, in Mangalore and has connectivity with Mumbai and Bangalore

» By Rail - Udupi is a major station on the Konkan railway route. There are connections with Mumbai and Mangalore.

» By Road - Different type of buses regularly travel from major southern cities to Udupi. You may choose from Volvo (AC buses), Airbuses or KSRTC buses depending on your budget.
